Finding your Flow...

Not all athletes experience 'Flow' but those who do never forget it. It's a feeling of invincibality on the field, time stands still, and you are competing so naturally and effortlessly. Every execution is timed to perfection and you feel no fatigue or anxiety, just a freedom and a clarity that won't be shaken.
It sounds like sporting utopia, and it is. But how do you get there?
Well it isn't a conscious moment.
Karageorghis & Terry refer to Flow in terms of focus and conentration. You are immersed in the activity, but it is effortless, there are no distractions from the task in hand. Research is still searching for answers, but there is evidence to suggest that the more one can improve their level of focus and concentration, the higher the chances of experiencing flow. Of course, this has to be matched with significant time practicing and perfecting your sport, and a high level of fitness for your level of competition.
Start working on your concentration now.
- pay attention to the times you get distracted, how often does this happen?
- how long do you typically compete before losing focus?
- make a record of this and work on improving
- recognize the triggers that get in the way of your ability to focus
- find ways to get your focus back (mental thoughts, habits, body language)
- one day you'll find your flow, you just won't know it until the drive home!
